Breath of the Sky

"Breath of the Sky," located in Harvard Yard, is a serene installation that transforms air into a visible and tangible experience. Featuring a weather observation balloon and a translucent canopy, the design explores the duality of air—its lightness and omnipresence contrasted with the weight of the climate crisis. The installation addresses pollution, urbanization, and environmental stewardship, inviting visitors to reflect on their connection to the atmosphere while fostering climate awareness and action.
Positioned below the tree line, its scale and placement immediately draw attention, with the translucent white canopy contrasting against the lush greenery and glowing radiantly at night. Visitors are guided toward its center—a floating weather balloon—encouraging collective engagement or quiet contemplation. Utilizing standard materials for weather detection, the project emphasizes atmospheric challenges while maintaining cost efficiency. The centerpiece is a 96-inch weather observation balloon, floating 6.6 feet above the ground, complemented by a translucent canopy spanning 450 square feet. This design creates a shaded, inviting space for visitors to engage in group conversations or moments of solitude.
By making air’s invisible essence visible, "Breath of the Sky" becomes both a symbol of environmental responsibility and a beacon of hope. It inspires people to reimagine their relationship with the atmosphere while encouraging meaningful steps toward sustainability.
